ITFGC Tech Talk: Internet of Things – ignore at your peril!

The Tech Talk on the Internet of Things was well attended with participants discussing a presentation on IoT technology and the potential for local deployments. It was pointed out that the Gold Coast City Council was pursuing a Smart Cities programme.

The importance of categorisation of IoT deployments was essential to accurately determine the safety and privacy requirements for an IoT deployment. Home Automation, Utilities, Vehicles, Agriculture, Healthcare and Manufacturing were each discussed.

It was noted that commercial deployments on LP WAN technology are increasing. These battery-based devices suit the low-power, long in-service lifetimes associated with many industrial applications.
ZigBee is leading the field in the personal area network environment where mesh networking is a beneficial technology and Z-Wave is strong in home automation.

The evening refreshments were sponsored by Crocodile Marketing.
